July 18, 2003, Newsletter Issue #79: Wilson Performance Racquets 2002

Tip of the Week

There are literally dozens of racquets to choose from in the marketplace. It makes buying a racquet bewildering, to say the least.

Team Wilson, headed up by Tim Beyer and his associates at Wilson Racquet Sports, have come up with a simple way to choose the right "stick" for you. Here is a summary of Wilson`s 2003 performance product line.

TRIAD-POWER, COMFORT, CONTROL

There are 9 racquets in this product line, ranging from the Triad 2 to the Triad 6.0. Wilson uses the numbers as a way to gauge the "swing index" of the racquet. The lower numbers are geared towards players with a "compact" swing, and the higher numbers for the "longer, loopier" swing.
TRIAD is literally 3 separate parts of the racquet fused into one stick!

HYPER HAMMER-SUPERLIGHT, EXPLOSIVE POWER

There are 4 racquets in this line, ranging from Hyper Hammer 2.8 to the Hyper Hammer 6.2. As the above description denotes, the Hyper Hammer is for the player who is looking for a lighter stick, without sacrificing power. I use the 5.2, which is for me a great combination of power without the head-heaviness. For me, it`s great for half-volleys and volleys, as well as serving.

PRO STAFF #1 ON TOUR

This is the "player`s line" of Wilson racquets. There are five new sticks for 2003, ranging from the Pro Staff Torch, to the Pro Staff Zone. The two heaviest racquets Wilson produces, the Wilson Hyper Pro Staff 6.1, and the Pro Staff Rok, are a college/touring player`s racquet, with a strung weight of 12.3 oz, and 11.8 oz respectively. The Rok has a dense string pattern (18 x 20). I`ve had a chance to demo the racquet--with Wilson`s new 17 gauge synthetic gut, it really plays like dynamite!

YOU GOTTA GET `EM IN YOUR HAND!

The only way to really see if these racquets are for you is to check `em out. tennis-warehouse.com has a demo program--they`ll send the Wilson racquets to your door to try out. Other demo programs are offered at super stores, but the best way to go is with a specialty store.

Although Wilson is the biggest tennis racquet manufacturer in the world, they`ve made a serious commitment to the grassroots game, which is certainly my target market, not only as a teaching pro, but a content provider right here at www.tennis-tips.com! So, check it out, and see what racquet works for you!

Have fun, and enjoy your upcoming Spring/Summer Tennis Season!

Best wishes,
