February 1, 2002, Newsletter Issue #11: Know Your Opponent

Tip of the Week

Make sure you know your opponent. Knowing your opponent will greatly increase your chances of winning. There are three types of players:

1) The "Strength" player: This player relies on power. To combat this type of player, make sure you return every ball with a lob or drop shot. This will drive your opponent mad and cause him/ her to make a mistake. Power can only last so long.

2) The "Baseline" player:
This player tends to stay at the baseline. Make sure you start placing all of your shots closer to the net. This will cause your opponent to hesitate in his/her shot since they are not used to playing at the net.

3) The "Anti-runner" player:
For this opponent, running is not the key. This player
relies too much on power, so keep this player running
cross-court to cross-court. He/she will eventually
burn out.
