July 25, 2003, Newsletter Issue #80: Agassi`s Swansong, Roddick`s Coming Out Party?

Tip of the Week

Have you noticed todayīs players, like Hewitt and Clijsters, fussing with their strings between points? Or Venus Williams exhaling for a second or two before serving? How about Agassi spinning his racquet before receiving serve?

Why do they do this? Simple! They have developed rituals that help them do the following:

RELAX!
CONCENTRATE!
THINK!

These rituals trigger a sub-conscious response from them, which helps them to "get ready" for the next point in the match.

What are your rituals? Do they help you to relax, concentrate, or think about your strategy?

Yogi Berra once said, "you canīt think and hit at the same time." Absolutely right! Thatīs why tennis touring professionals use rituals--to "think" between shots, not during the point!

Good luck,
Jim
